Summer Camp: Exploring our Number System

At Promesa, we believe that our youngest learners are some of our most curious, passionate learners and work to ensure that their teachers are knowledgeable and deeply passionate about the content they teach. This summer, we want students to experience this through a math summer camp!

We're excited to offer a FREE week-long camp for 3rd through 5th graders in which they will discover how number systems have developed over time from ancient Egypt and Babylon to the base-ten system that we use today. As students begin to analyze ancient number systems and gain a deep understanding of place value and exponents, they will create their own number systems and then venture into the world of binary numbers. At the end of the week, students will exhibit their learnings from the week for their families and the public.

Note: We recommend that students who register for this camp have a basic understanding of place value (for example, understanding that the number 453 is equivalent to 3 ones, 5 tens, and 4 hundreds) as this camp will extend their understanding of place value beyond what they may learn in a traditional school.

What Students Can Expect Daily:

  • An inquiry-based learning environment where they will experience what it feels like to be a mathematician as they propose theories and work to justify them

  • Fun math challenges to take home daily and an opportunity to present their solutions to their peers

  • Mathematical concepts that demonstrate the beauty and history of the subject in a way that goes beyond what they may normally be exposed to

  • Time at the end of every day to play games with their peers that reinforce various mathematical concepts

  • Time to work alongside a group of peers that are engaged in and excited about math

  • An opportunity to present their learnings to a public audience during the final exhibition
